Fort Myers lies on the beautiful, wide Caloosahatchee River. Tropical flowers and palm trees dot the landscape, which today boasts a revitalized downtown, historic neighborhoods, shopping, and a breathtaking waterfront. The fort itself, named for Lt. Col. Abraham Myers, was established to quell uprisings and help the Indian Removal campaigns. It was later used by Union forces in the Civil War, abandoned, and then reoccupied by courageous settlers who relied on the cattle business and farming to sustain families and the community. In the late 1800s, Fort Myers began to attract famous winter residents, such as "electrician" Thomas Edison, as well as wealthy sportsmen trying their luck at tarpon fishing. When the "iron horse" finally arrived in 1904, Fort Myers experienced an economic transformation, and her days as a frontier cow town were numbered.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Beach: True Tall Tales of Zany Animals and Crazy People Making Mayhem in the Mangroves of Florida (English Edition)
For almost a decade the author ferried thousands of people to and from the parking lot to Clam Pass Beach in Naples Florida. The vehicle known locally as a Tram is a seven passenger stretch golf cart limo. There are more than 60 of them in service in the Pelican Bay area of Naples. The 3/4 mile long trip takes place on an elevated boardwalk through a pristine saltwater estuary that hosts a goodly amount of flora and fauna. The former consists of primarily red, white and black mangrove trees. But the fauna. Oh, the fauna. Someone should write a funny book about the fauna and the people. Wait, this is it. Zany animals and crazy people making mayhem in the mangroves of Florida.

Spanning a period of over forty years (1817-1858), the three Seminole Wars were America’s longest, costliest, and deadliest Indian wars, surpassing the more famous ones fought in the West. After an uneasy peace following the conclusion of the second Seminole War in 1842, a series of hostile events followed by a string of murders in 1849 and 1850 made confrontation inevitable. The war was also known as Billy Bowlegs' War because Billy Bowlegs (Holata Micco) was the main Seminole leader in this the last Indian war to be fought east of the Mississippi River. Pushed by increasing encroachment into their territory he led a raid near Fort Myers. A series of violent skirmishes ensued. The vastness of the Floridian wilderness and the difficulties of the terrain and climate caused problems for the army, but they had learnt lessons from the second war and amongst other new tactics employed greater use of boats, eventually securing victory through cutting off food supplies.Although there are several books covering the entire Seminole Wars period and excellent works on the First and Second Seminole Wars, the Third Seminole War has long been neglected. This book seeks to fill that void at a time when interest in the Seminole Wars is growing.History of the Third Seminole War is a detailed ...

Although best known as the winter home of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, Fort Myers has one of the most engaging and extraordinary histories of any city in Florida. The spawn of a hurricane, Fort Myers began as a U.S. Army post during Florida's Seminole Wars. During the Civil War, it became a battleground between Confederates and Yankees for cattle and, after the war, a gun-slinging cowboy town. New York cartoonist Walt McDougall blew into the area on a fishing trip, and his glowing description lured down other wealthy Yankee sportsmen who helped turn this isolated frontier town into a modern tourist destination. Historian and author Cynthia Williams explores the hidden stories behind the growth of this beautiful city.

Prolific inventor Thomas Edison and automobile pioneer Henry Ford shaped the modern world like few others. The lives of these close friends intersected at their winter homes in southwest Florida. Edison first visited the tiny cattle-ranching community of Fort Myers in 1885, building a home and laboratory soon after. There, he wintered with his wife, Mina, and their children, Madeleine, Charles, and Theodore. Ford purchased the adjacent estate in 1916, wintering in the area with his wife, Clara, and son, Edsel. Here in southwest Florida, these famous neighbors relaxed and found time to explore new projects.

For the young men of Dunbar—the low-income, historically segregated neighborhoods of Fort Myers, Florida—avoiding the path that leads to easy money as a drug dealer often means choosing complete devotion to football and dreams of NFL stardom. While such dreams remain out of reach for most, an astonishing number of Dunbar athletes, including NFL idols Deion Sanders, Jevon Kearse, and Earnest Graham, have achieved massive success.Fourth Down in Dunbar is the story of how one community, plagued by drugs and violence, where many children are fatherless, gave rise to so many stellar youth athletes. Using Sanders as the centerpiece of the story, David Dorsey explores Dunbar’s history to show how the same drug culture that ruined so many promising futures also served as motivation for football success. As a reporter for the Fort Myers News-Press, Dorsey had exclusive access to the players and their relatives. He shows the success of the wildly talented as well as the regrets of those who took the wrong path, while highlighting hope for the future of Dunbar. In this poignant tale of heartbreak and triumph, Dorsey reveals the true nature of these men who overcame the obstacles in their lives and made their families and their hometown proud.

For most people in Southwest Florida, the name Buckingham is just one more dot on a map―a rural area east of U.S. Interstate 75. But for a few years, it was so much more. Starting in 1942, it was the site of the Buckingham Army Air Field―home to some 16,000 men and women supporting the United States’ World War II efforts. Airplanes roared in the skies over Lee County and reflected off the azure waters of the Gulf of Mexico as tens of thousands of young men trained as aerial gunners. Learning to target and bring down enemy aircraft with their guns was critical to America’s success in both the European and Pacific theaters. On the ground, trucks rumbled across the mammoth base, soldiers marched in review under the hot Florida sun, and an entire town sprang up on what was once swampland. Barracks were built, along with stores, nightclubs, churches, and even a hospital with its own baby ward. Today the memories of Buckingham Army Air Field can be found hiding in plain sight, including a working airport that was once the heart of the base.
